In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history. Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists. Once more, the former Roman territories embraced the writings of ancient Greeks and Romans, and the idea of humanism. The Renaissance was a cultural revitalization that spread across Europe, and had repercussions across the globe, but one smallish city-state in Italy was in many ways the epicenter of the thing. Florence, or as Italians might say, Firenze, was the home to a seemingly inordinate amount of the art, architecture, literature, and cultural output of the Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo daVinci, Sandro Boticelli, and many others were associated with the city, and the money of patrons like the Medici family made a lot of the art possible. Today you'll learn about how the Renaissance came to be, and what impact it had on Europe and the world. Our Sources: Hunt, Lynn et al. The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures, 6th ed. Stephen Smith explores Renaissance Florence under the reign of Grand Duke Cosimo Medici. Cosimo’s fledgling court prized the finer things in life and some of the greatest painters, sculptors and craftsmen in world history came to serve the Grand Duke. But successful courtiers had to have brains as well as brawn. The canniest of them looked to theorists like Niccolo Machiavelli for underhand ways to get ahead, whilst enlightened polymaths turned their minds to the heavens, and to ice cream. What if you only had a year to live? Take a moment and seriously consider your answer to this question. What would you do? Maybe you’d spend your time close to home, appreciating time with loved ones. Or, maybe you’d pack your bags and travel the world. Maybe you’re interested in philanthropy and would dedicate that year to community service. Or maybe you’d spend most of your time alone, quietly reflecting on your life. But the truth is, you can’t cram a lifetimes worth of experiences, achievements, challenges and friendships into one year. Life doesn’t work that way. But what you can do is make sure that you don’t take your time for granted, and that you consciously choose to pay attention to the things that are most important to you. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. When you open your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you, you not only learn how to live but find what to live for. Life can be tough, and it makes people act tough too. But this is often not a true reflection of their inner selves - rather it is a shield to protect themselves against the hardships and uncertainties of this world. Behind every stern facade or weathered demeanor, there's a story waiting to be heard, wounds in need of healing, and a heart capable of boundless compassion. Beneath the layers of self-preservation, lies the genuine desire to connect, empathise, and be there for others. And when we catch a glimpse of the beauty of the human spirit, we are reminded that kindness and love reside within us all, awaiting the chance to bloom and illuminate the world. The real treasures in life are not found in the attic or contained in any physical thing. Our hearts know that real treasures are simply moments, memories and people. Yet our thoughts cloud what our hearts see so clearly. Our mind tells us to hold on so that we don’t lose something or miss out on anything - that if we let it go, we won’t have enough - and that if we don’t have enough, we won’t be enough. But no matter how much money you make or how much you have, you’ll never be more content, healthy, happy or loved. Nothing you own will bring someone back into your life or make someone in your life love you more. If you want a joyful life that is filled with love and happiness, align your actions with your heart. When you finally let go, your heart will embrace your real treasures. Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like and enjoying it for everything that it is. Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. From the bustling streets of busy cities to the serene landscapes of remote towns and villages, humanity encompasses a remarkable array of cultures and traditions. Yet beneath our diverse appearances and backgrounds, we all share similar experiences of joy and pain, love, and loss. When we start to embrace this shared humanity, focussing on the qualities that unite us, we start to create a sense of empathy and understanding. When we seek to truly understand the perspectives and emotions of others, we put ourselves in their shoes, bridging the gap between ourselves and others. And by leading with kindness, we create a ripple effect that spreads throughout our communities and beyond, contributing to a more compassionate and inclusive society.
