In 2007, the US Navy tested an electromagnetic railgun by firing it at a world record 10.64 megajoules and the seven pound test slug attained an incredible muzzle velocity of 8,268 feet per second. It was estimated that the same model could spew out 20 slugs in less than one minute and hit targets up to 63 nautical miles away. In 2021 though, the U.S. Navy pulled the plug on the much-hyped electromagnetic railgun, shifting resources to the development of hypersonic missiles and other high-tech weapons instead.

🤍 🤍 🤍 Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! 🤍 ArcFlash Labs has come out with a new coil gun design that takes the best elements of their underpowered EMG-01 and their overly bulky GR-1 Anvil and melded them into a much handier EMG-02. This new design maintains the same muzzle velocity as the Anvil (200-250 fps / 60-75 m/s) but uses smaller projectiles (5/16" armatures). It is far better handling, with the balance much improved by having a single large capacitor mounted at the rear and a battery directly under the grip. That battery is also now a commercial off-the-shelf rechargeable lithium-ion type. It's quite a lot of fun to shoot, and I am excited to see where this technology continues to develop! While superior in every way to traditional cannons, defensive technology has very quickly caught up and today's high-tech missiles are all too often at risk of being countered by enemy missile defenses. High powered lasers can burn out a missile's guidance system at long range, powerful jamming pods can interfere with a missile's targeting, electronic warfare suites can even hack into a missile's active guidance and disrupt it, and smaller, more agile missiles or high-speed computer controlled chain guns can intercept them mid-flight. Railguns generate an electromagnetic charge to expel projectiles at velocities much faster than conventional gunpowder can achieve. US intelligence services believe rounds fired by China’s version of the experimental cannon can reach 1.6 miles per second some 5,700mph, or above Mach 7, according to a CNBC News report from last June. BAE Systems was awarded a $34.5 million contract from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for the development of the Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun under Phase 2 of the Navy's Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) program. The focus of Phase 2 is to advance the Railgun technology by maturing the launcher and pulsed power from a single shot operation to a multi-shot capability, and incorporating auto-loading and thermal management systems. "We're committed to developing this innovative and game changing technology that will revolutionize naval warfare," said Chris Hughes, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems. "The Railgun's ability to defend against enemy threats from distances greater than ever before improves the capabilities of our armed forces." In 2012, during Phase 1 of the INP program, engineers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia successfully fired BAE Systems' EM Railgun prototype at tactical energy levels. The recently awarded ONR contract marks the completion of Phase 1 and the selection of BAE Systems as the developer for the Phase 2 launcher prototype. Phase 2 is anticipated to begin immediately with initial prototypes to be delivered in 2014. The Railgun development will be carried out by BAE Systems in Minneapolis, Minnesota and by teammates IAP Research in Dayton, Ohio and SAIC in Marietta, Georgia. The EM Railgun is a long-range weapon technology that uses high-power electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to launch a projectile farther and faster than any gun before it. When fully weaponized, a Railgun will deliver hypervelocity projectiles on target, at ranges far exceeding the Navy's current capability. The Department of the Navy's science and technology corporate board chartered the Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) construct to foster game-changing and disruptive technologies ahead of the normal requirements process. The Electromagnetic Railgun INP was initiated in 2005. The goal during Phase I is a proof-of-concept demonstration at 32 mega-joule muzzle energy has been achieved. A future weapon system at this energy level would be capable of launching a 100-nautical mile projectile. This launch energy has the advantage of being able to stress many components to evaluate full-scale mechanical and electromagnetic forces. Phase I was focused on the development of launcher technology with adequate service life, development of reliable pulsed power technology and component risk reduction for the projectile. Phase II, which started in 2012, will advance the technology for transition to an acquisition program. Phase II technology efforts will concentrate on demonstrating a rep-rate fire capability. Thermal management techniques required for sustained firing rates will be developed for both the launcher system and the pulsed power system. The railgun is a true warfighter game changer. Wide-area coverage, exceptionally quick response and very deep magazines will extend the reach and lethality of ships armed with this technology.

The Indigo Parallel on Steam: 🤍 In this video I talk about the Railgun Projectiles in The Expanse. There is a piece of concept art that made me want to make this video and ask the question- do all railguns fire with three stages? These stages are: In stage 1 the projectile assembly is fired. In stage 2 the sabot casing separates as the round leaves the railgun. In stage 3 an airburst of the sub-projectiles maximizes the damage radius. I analyze and breakdown the VFX scenes with railguns to answer this question. I slow down the footage and increase the brightness of the clips as well.
