Payzee Mahmod was a normal teenager, idolising pop stars and pursuing her education. But her childhood was stolen from her when, at just 16 years old, her parents coerced her into marrying a much older man. Lacking the knowledge, power and language to protest the marriage, Payzee hoped another adult or professional in her life would intervene, help her and stop the marriage. Tragically the marriage went ahead and Payzee turned to self-harm and small acts of rebellion, to try and escape. But then everything changed. Her sister Banaz left her own abusive child marriage andmoved back in with their parents. In January 2006, after months of rumours and death threats, Banaz went missing. Three months later, her body was found in Birmingham - her father, her uncle and 3 other Kurdish men were tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. When Payzee turned 18, she got divorced and arranged Banaz’s funeral - all in the same month. Now she is speaking out on behalf of herself, her sister Banaz, and every child at risk of child marriage, to demand that the current law in England and Wales which shockingly allows marriage from 16 with parental consent is changed and that child marriage under the age of 18 becomes a crime. A survivor of child marriage, who lost her sister Banaz in a tragic “honour” killing, Payzee’s focus to prevent so called “honour” based abuse and child marriage could not be more personal. A Kurdish immigrant, raised in London, with a successful career in the fashion industry, she uses her voice to speak out as a survivor – not a victim – and has made it her mission to be a changemaker, helping to tackle these harmful practices. As an IKWRO ambassador and campaigner, her story and experiences have reached international audiences, including the Kurdish community. She has spoken widely on the need for changes to the laws surrounding child marriage and “honour” based abuse across radio, television and newspapers and met with government officials and the Home Office to explain first-hand why change is needed to finally make child marriage a crime. I grew up in a really traditional family that has totally outdated views of men and women. From a super young age, my parents pounded it into my head that I was going to get married, be a good housewife who cooked and cleaned, and have as many babies as possible. For a while, I was on board with that. But as I got older, I started educating myself. To be frank, I was a nerd. I realized that I had options – like maybe I could cure cancer, or fly into space, or create new energy sources! I was excited about all these things, but my family wasn’t. They insisted that I needed to get good grades, but as soon as I graduated high school, I was going to get married. I was so upset that that was my future, but in the meantime, I figured I had to learn as much as I could. Because of our religion, I wasn’t allowed to hang out with people after school. After school was for finishing homework and doing my ‘woman’s work,’ while my dad and brothers sat on the couch watching TV. Because of that, I was unpopular. I wasn’t allowed to go to school dances, or join clubs, or even go on the cool field trips that the school scheduled. Because of this, I quickly got a reputation as a loner and an outcast...and people bullied me relentlessly. While child marriage takes place in practically every region of the world, it occurs at higher rates in South Asia (46%), sub-Saharan Africa (37%), and Latin America and the Caribbean (29%).Although boys are vulnerable, the practice affects girls in much larger numbers, violating their right to a healthy, productive life and self-determination. Girls who are married early typically stop going to school and are unlikely to develop employable skills, limiting their future economic opportunities and personal development, thus contributing to the perpetuation of the practice. Due to the difference in age and maturity with their typically adult partners, child brides are also at greater risk of experiencing violence, abuse and exploitation, because they are less able to negotiate sexual relationships than older women, nor the use of contraceptives, making them vulnerable to unwanted and frequent pregnancies and to sexually transmitted infections. Early pregnancy also leads to many other health problems, including birth complications and death during delivery, jeopardizing the health of both young mothers and their babies. In addition, child mothers are typically less well-informed than adult mothers of positive parenting techniques to feed and to care for their children, resulting in increased stunting, wasting or underweight conditions. UNICEF supports governments and civil society to carry out integrated programmes for the elimination of child marriage based on promising programme experiences and social science evidence. Fundamentally, programmes and policies aim to be culturally sensitive, recognizing that marriage is seen as a private matter and a cherished tradition in many cultures. Simultaneously, they facilitate community-wide discussions to expose families and the public at large to the harms associated with the practice and to human rights principles. This has resulted in community-wide decisions to support girls to delay marriage and respect their rights. Ending child marriage requires government commitment to enact policy and legal reforms specifically on child marriage as well as on related issues of gender discrimination. It also requires that governments facilitate national dialogue toward changing social norms that uphold the practice. Strengthening social and educational services is crucial to providing viable alternatives to marriage for girls as well as services for girls and women who are already married or pregnant, as well as engaging adolescents and young people in discussions for the abandonment of the practice. The Republican-dominated Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the bill on a 9-8 vote, a week after it passed the House of Delegates. The vote came shortly after the bill’s main sponsor, Democratic Del. Kayla Young of Kanawha County, testified briefly before the committee. She said that since 2000 there have been more than 3,600 marriages in the state involving one or more children. Currently, children can marry as young as 16 in West Virginia with parental consent. Angel was 13 when her mother forced her to marry and start a family. "I felt like a slave," she says of her childhood. While countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and El Salvador have recently banned child marriage, it remains legal in the US - and half of states have no set minimum age below which you cannot get married.
