At 171 metres long, the USS Pennsylvania is the biggest submarine in the US Navy. It can dive deeper than a thousand feet, sail for 20 years without refuelling, and remain submerged for up to 6 months. The vessel carries a crew of 155 men and a deadly nuclear arsenal. The film investigates how this submarine was made possible through a series of six historic engineering breakthroughs. The SSBN Typhoon-class submarine, officially designated the Akula (“Shark”) in Russia, is a Cold War behemoth measuring 175 meters long and displacing 48,000 tonnes as it sinks. That's double the tonnage of American Ohio-class SSBNs it was meant to compete with. No less than five internal pressure hulls made of ultra-expensive titanium gave the Typhoon outstanding resistance to battle damage. Submarines had a great influence in military history and are technical masterpieces. When submarines were first used more than 100 years ago, hardly anyone believed in their usefulness. Many admirals were convinced that the simple "submersibles" could not stand up to the powerful battleships. This changed in the First World War. For the first time, submarines operated militarily in larger numbers. The reconnaissance boats quickly become hunters that sink enemy ships. In British and Allied propaganda, the German submarine became synonymous with treachery, cruelty and inhumanity in naval warfare. The German submariners were hailed as heroes at home. The image of the U-boat commander as a silent hunter did the rounds. This heroic glorification has little to do with the reality and the danger the crews find themselves in on every mission. Submarines originated from a completely non-military idea, namely to be able to look at the world under water. In its history, the submarine was and is both a deadly steel monster and a vital shelter. As impressive as its construction is, as terrifying is its destructive power. Hardly any other weapon triggers as many emotions as the submarine. It strikes from ambush and can tear the whole world into the abyss with nuclear missiles. In this submarines for kids video, toddlers will learn about underwater vehicles with Speedie DiDi! What Country Has The Quietest Submarines? For ocean going activities, even though a diesel electric on batteries is quieter than any nuclear powered submarine, every time a diesel sub has to either surface or snorkel to run the diesels to charge the batteries they are relatively easy to find. I say relatively as it is still a big ocean. Here, the essentially unlimited endurance of the nuclear submarine wins out over the non-nuclear powered submarine. For littoral regions, especially short-term, you cannot beat a diesel-electric submarine. But, all things considered, the stealthiest submarine (at least known) is probably the Gotland class submarines of the Royal Swedish Navy. During World War II, submarines became increasingly important. From the Cold War on, they could even destroy the earth with nuclear missiles. Submarines today are highly complex machines, crammed with technology and weapons. As impressive as their construction is, as terrifying is their destructive power. Hardly any other weapon triggers as many emotions as the submarine. It strikes from ambush and can use nuclear missiles to drag the whole world into the abyss. Its camouflage is its greatest potential. The Nazis celebrated the submarine as a miracle weapon. The myth of invincibility has clung to them ever since. Submariners were glorified as heroes by Nazi propaganda. The reality in the Second World War was different: Two thirds of the submariners lost their lives during the missions. The advent of the atomic age also opened up completely new possibilities for the submarine weapon. Nuclear propulsion allowed almost unlimited diving times and a completely new weapon system with ballistic missiles on board. The outer hull has an ellipsoidal bow and spindle-shaped stern. The pressure hull, made of titanium alloy, has a relatively simple shaping - a cylindrical midsection and tapered extremities. The titanium construction allowed for a drastic reduction in the ship's magnetic field. The Russian Navy has a total of four submarines of this project.
