Can Using an SSD Cache Make Your Slow Cheap 16 TB Hard Disk Feel Like an NVMe?!

Pat's been using lvmcache on his virtual machine host for years, but he's only been using it on his desktop for a month or so. It has been doing a fantastic job of making a slow, old 4 TB hard drive feel just as fast as his NVMe, and it saves him the trouble of having to decide which data needs to be on fast or slow media. Brian is only a little behind here. He just rebuilt his gaming PC, and he is trying out PrimoCache. He doesn't have much to report yet, but I imagine he will in the future! 🤍 Pat = - Blog: 🤍 - Youtube: 🤍 - Patreon: 🤍 Brian = - Blog: 🤍 - Youtube: 🤍 - Patreon: 🤍

What is RAID and why do I need it on my NAS Drive? 🤍 Large RAID storage for archive data storage solutions RAID is not a new thing. Originally created as means of combining multiple smaller hard drives and combining them into 1 large storage volume (so your PC would only see one hard drive like your C:/ drive, instead of several smaller hard drives connected). RAID stands for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Now the reason for the two different versions of the letters in RAID is largely due to how storage has changed. As Hard drives have grown progressively larger in capacity, the need for creating massive volumes has been outweighed by the more current trend of data storage arrays needing Redundancy. The Synology DS920+ 4-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review 🤍 Synology NAS - SATA vs NVMe SSD Caching Tests - 🤍 When the new Synology Diskstation series was revealed a few weeks ago, I think it was safe to say that it got peoples attention! The previous 18+ series of NAS had been around since September 2017 and many users were starting to get worried about choosing the older generation or holding out for a brand new announcement of something bigger and better to come. During this time, the unit that seemed to get the most mention, was the DS920+, a follow up to the remarkably popular DS918+ (possibly one of the most popular diskstation NAS they have ever put out) and one that provides a fantastic balance of hardware on day 1, upgradability down the line and excellent access to the award-winning Diskstation Manager (DSM) software platform. The full release date of the Synology DS920+ NAS is still to be confirmed in Europe and the US, however, you can still find it listed for sale in some regions of the world. Which brings me to today's review of the Synology DS920+ NAS, which is currently on very limited sale in Japan. Thanks to the wonderful world of the internet, worldwide logistics and most of all, the huge assistance of 'Takeo from Tokyo' - find this hero on Reddit here) I can bring you the hardware review (software review coming soon) of the brand new expandable 4-Bay from Synology and their 2020 series. As mentioned previously, this new NAS is in someway a good jump forward in hardware abilities, and a smaller step in others. There is no denying that it is one of the best NAS drives they have put out for a while, but the main questions to answer in today's review are, is this a better choice of the DS918+ NAS that came before it (and perhaps might be a pinch cheaper now) and if you are a current owner of the DS918+, is the DS920+ enough of an upgrade to warrant trading up? Let's take a look at the hardware and find out. This description contains links to Amazon. These links will take you to some of the products mentioned in today's video. M.2 NVMe SSDs are insanely fast and have completely changed the way I think about SSD Caching on Synology NAS. Previously with 2.5 inch SATA SSD's SSD caching on Synology NAS was only useful for truly random workflows, due to the fact that sequential reads were slower on the SSD than the array of disks. However with M.2 NVMe SSDs this is no longer the case, due to their insane speed. #NVMeSSD #Synology #ReadWriteCache Hire Me! 🤍 Join the Discord! 🤍 Get Early Access to Videos! 🤍 How to install NVMe SSDs cache in DS1621+ 🤍 Performance testing NVMe SSDs: 🤍 M.2 SSDs I recommend for Synology: Synology Branded (Most compatible & expensive) 🤍 IronWolf (Good mix of support and price) 🤍 SK Hynix (best bang for your buck, may have compatibility issues) 🤍

Benefits of SSD Cache in NAS - What is the Real Speed Difference?

SSD caching, also known as flash caching, is the temporary storage of data on NAND flash memory chips in a solid-state drive (SSD) so data requests can be met with improved speed. In a common scenario, a computer system stores a temporary copy of the most active data in the SSD cache and a permanent copy of the data on a hard disk drive (HDD). A flash cache is often used with slower HDDs to improve data access times. Caches can be used for data reads or writes. The goal of SSD read caching in an enterprise IT environment is to store previously requested data as it travels through the network so it can be retrieved quickly when needed. Placing previously requested information in temporary storage, or cache, reduces demand on an enterprise's bandwidth and accelerates access to the most active data. SSD caching can also be a cost-effective alternative to storing data on top-tier flash storage. The objective of SSD write caching is to temporarily store data until slower persistent storage media has adequate resources to complete the write operation. The SSD write cache can boost overall system performance. Martin: Using SSD as cache In this segment of his Storage Decisions presentation, Dennis Martin of Demartek discusses the benefits of using SSD as cache. Play Fullscreen Demartek President Dennis Martin explains the benefits of using solid-state storage as cache for hot data. The form factor options of a flash-based cache include a SAS, Serial ATA or nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) SSD; a PCI Express (PCIe) card; or a dual in-line memory module (DIMM) installed in server memory sockets. SSD cache software applications, working with SSD cache drive hardware, can help to boost the performance of applications and virtual machines (VMs), including VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. They can also extend basic operating system (OS) caching features with Linux and Windows. SSD cache software options are available from storage, OS, VM, application and third-party vendors. How SSD caching works Host software or a storage controller determines the data that will be cached. An SSD cache is secondary to DRAM-, nonvolatile DRAM (NVRAM) and RAM-based caches implemented in a computer system. When a data request is made, the system queries the SSD cache after each DRAM-, NVRAM- or RAM-based cache miss. The request goes to the primary storage system if the DRAM-, NVRAM-, RAM- and SSD-based caches do not have a copy of the data. The effectiveness of an SSD cache depends on the ability of the cache algorithm to predict data access patterns. With efficient cache algorithms, a large percentage of I/O can be served from an SSD cache. Examples of SSD caching algorithms include: Least Frequently Used. Tracks how often data is accessed; the entry with the lowest count is removed first from the cache. Least Recently Used. Retains recently used data near the top of cache; when the cache is full, the less recently accessed data is removed. Types of SSD caching System manufacturers use different types of SSD caching, such as the following: Write-through SSD caching. The system writes data to the SSD cache and to the primary storage device at the same time. Data is not available from the SSD cache until the host confirms the write operation is complete at both the cache and the primary storage device. Write-through SSD caching can be cheaper for a manufacturer to implement because the cache does not require data protection. A drawback is the latency associated with the initial write operation. Write-back SSD caching. The host confirms a data I/O block is written to the SSD cache before the data is written to the primary storage device. Data is available from the SSD cache before the data is written to primary storage. The advantage is low latency for both read and write operations. The main disadvantage is the risk of data loss in the event of an SSD cache failure. Vendors using a write-back cache typically implement protections such as redundant SSDs, mirroring to another host or controller, or battery-backed RAM. Write-around SSD caching. The system writes data directly to the primary storage device, bypassing the SSD cache. The SSD cache requires a warmup period, as the storage system responds to data requests and populates the cache. The response time for the initial data request from primary storage will be slower than subsequent requests for the same data served from the SSD cache. Write-around caching reduces the chance that infrequently accessed data will flood the cache. This description contains links to Amazon. Speed Up Your UnRaid Write Performance! SSDs

Need to speed up your write speeds to you UnRAID Storage Server? Take a look at adding an SSD Cache drive to speed up writes! The SSD that I used in this video is a Teamgroup CX2 dram-less budget drive. After benchmarking the drive, I was able to write to it at 100-110Mb/s for the first 10-20gb. After that, file copies of small and large files max out around 80-85MB/s. This is still a lot faster for writes than just the hard drives BUT, a faster SSD with dram is preferred. I suggest something along the lines of a Samsung 860 EVO / Pro for a 2.5 drive or an MP34 nvme drive. SATA SSD for Cache Drive: 🤍 NVMe SSD for Cache Drive: 🤍 Today I’m going to walk through the process of adding an SSD drive to my UnRAID storage server to function as a cache drive to amp up my write speeds to the UnRAID array. I’ll be using the TeamGroup CX2 1terrabyte 2.5inch SSD often found around $80 on sale. So, if you’re like me and you really like your data on your UnRAID server, you’re probably running not only 1 parity drive, but dual parity drives. This is a great way to add another layer of fault tolerance when a drive dies randomly or during an array rebuild. The main downside to dual parity setups, other than taking up another hard drive bay and SATA port, is that it will can reduce your average write speeds to the UnRAID array. If you’re running a 1 gigabit network, you can max out somewhere between 100-111Mb/s. When writing data to the array, on the fastest drive, with dual parity setup, I can normally hit about 60Mb/s. 60Mb/s is not bad but it’s really not very great when I am moving large media files or running some kind of data backup. This is where the cache SSD comes into play. The cache SSD in UnRAID can perform a few different functions such as temporary data storage until the mover saves the data to the array, permanent data storage for files accessed frequently by one or more hosts, or for docker and virtual machines. Synology DS920+ NAS - SATA vs NVMe SSD Caching Test

NAS systems are incredibly convenient. They are the - quite indispensable - data tanks of today. Your own cloud. In the electrical room, the server rack or just on the desk, maybe. In many cases, a NAS full of mechanical hard drives is fine. Not everyone needs super fast access times. However, for those who use their NAS intensively and therefore want some extra 'snappyness': SSD cache makes that possible!
